This will be a tough weekend for the Spartans, playing both of last year’s playoff & league champions, Whitley Bay & Nottingham.

This Saturday the Spartans will be keen to avenge their only loss this season, after loosing 4-1 at Whitley Bay on the opening weekend. The game had been a close affair, with the score at 1-1 going into the last 10 minutes, but a rushed 5 on 3 powerplay setup resulted in a blocked shot and a 2 on 0 breakaway goal for the Warriors. The Spartans scored an equalizing goal, which was disallowed due to a man in the crease. Whitley then scored a further 2 goals in the remaining minutes, putting the game out of Sheffield’s reach.

Last weekend the Spartans went for two full hours of play without conceding a goal, after a home 9-0 win against Blackburn and an away 4-0 win against league newcomers Coventry, with both Ben Bowns and Dmitri Zimozdra earning shutouts.

The Spartans were always in full control of the game against Blackburn, with organized powerplay units taking full advantage of Blackburn penalties. Blackburn did have some clears cut scoring chances, but Dmitri Zimozdra made some outstanding saves to prevent any goals. The Spartans were well disciplined, taking few penalties whilst two Blackburn players received game penalties.

Last Sunday the Spartans traveled to Coventry to face the ENL Blaze. Coventry had earned a draw up in Whitley Bay the previous weekend so the Sheffield side was expecting a tough game. Coventry had several big players who made plenty of hits, they were well organized. After a goal-less first period the Spartans stepped up a gear, scoring 3 unanswered goals from Tom Squires, Shaun Ashton & Will Barron. Going into the third period with a 3-0 lead, the Spartans were keen to keep a clean sheet. Some solid defending and another goal, this time from Scott Morris season the win.

The Saturday home game against Whitley Bay faces off at 19.15, good seats are still available.
