Blackburn / Nottingham Double Header Weekend!

A huge weekend of Hockey for the Spartans this weekend, with Blackburn and Nottingham coming to town on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Blackburn looked strong at the Newcastle tournament, and with Nottinghams 7-1 thrashing of the Northern Stars last weekend, they look like they have hit the ground running this season.

We will need all the support we can get, to get 4 points from our biggest rivals, and put us in the running for a playoff spot this season.

We will be without the services of Will Barron this weekend, but hopefully brother Oliver will be making his 2010 Spartans Debut.

We will also be giving away one of new Spartans polo shirts to a lucky winner…

Bradford 4/9/10 (away)

Saturday saw us travelling to Bradford for our first League game of the new season. The players were looking forward to putting right the wrongs from the Newcastle tournament, which saw Bradford battle out a 2-2 draw.

The game was delayed, due to damaged nets, which saw us start on the powerplay, we switched our 1st and 2nd lines around, to give us a more varied attack, and went right at them from the start. All in all, we controlled the game, but still made some sloppy mistakes which i am desperate to cut out, when we play against a more skilled opposition, we will be punished.

We showed moments of brilliance, which i know is there, we just need to be stronger, and more disciplined in all 3 zones.

We completely deserved our 7-2 victory, which could have been more. We had some fantastic performances, and the guys are looking forward to next weekends home double headers v Blackburn, and Nottingham.

Thank you to all the supporters who made the trip with us.

UPDATE

Our 2nd League game of the 2010/11 season, v Telford (a) has been posponed, and will be re-arranged at a later date.

We have some details to finalise, but we are pleased to announce that, Oliver Barron, and Callum Rawson will be part of the Spartans Squad for the 2010/11 season.

Oliver joins us from the Sheffield Steeldogs EPL team, and Callum is returning after an unsettled Pre season with his team in Amercia.

Coaches Update

With just over a week to go until the Northern League ‘Face off’ tournament, things are coming together in preparation for the new season. The guys have worked hard during our ‘Off ice’ sessions, and have carried the momentum into the 3 ‘on ice’ sessions that we have had in recent weeks. We, like many teams, have lost some players to the EPL league, but each departure gives an opportunity for somebody else to shine… which has certainly happened.

Im delighted with the work ethic, and talent within the squad, and also the reaction of the squad to a change of coach, and captain.

We are looking to work on a few things at the tournament next week, which will give us a good idea of what we can expect from the season. Our main aim is to play hardworking, attacking Hockey, and hopefully get ourselves into the playoffs at the end of the regular season.

The EIHA and SIH Ltd are pleased to bring you the “NEW” Northern League – this 8 team league consisting of Solway Sharks – Fife Flyers – Whitley Bay Warriors – Blackburn Hawks – Northern Stars – Sheffield Spartans – Bradford Bulldogs – Flintshire Freeze.

The League has been assembled in such away that is sustainable and has a great future to grow – remember the days when the mighty Fife Flyers crossed over the border into England to take on many an English team, well those days are back.

A great deal of effort has gone into bringing this league together and to start the season off we have all teams taking part in an opening tournament “Northern League – The Face Off” it takes place at the Metro Radio Arena Newcastle on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th August, some epic battles are about to commence so why not make sure you don’t miss out on the first encounters of the season.
Not only will you see some fast and furious hockey you will see current GB, England and Scotland players along side some well known faces and young guns looking to make their mark and stake a claim on their place.

Sports Fan – Hockey Fan – Never seen Hockey Fan – it does not matter get yourself down to the Newcastle Metro Radio Arena and watch things unfold it will be a great weekend out and fantastic value for money including a reduction for a 2 day weekend ticket.

As you can see this is the new Spartans site. You may also notice that we have gone back to our original identity & our green/black/white colours.

The site will be a work in progress over the next few weeks, with content to be added as & when we have it.

Both Greg & Lynn will have access to edit the site, so the site will be much more up to date than it has been in the past.
