Spartans went into battle with Blackburn Hawks missing Ollie Barron, Scott Morris, and Nick Whyatt along with, Dougie & Ross Jordan. Stuart Brittle was available to play however with Brandon Stones starting in goal with Brad Day backing up in front of another decent sized crowd.
Hawks were clearly in confident mood and fired up for this one but it took them until 9.05 to break down a stubborn Spartans defence with a goal from Imo Dimitrijevs, assisted Adam Brittle. Spartans managed to pull one back through Will Barron on 14.41, assisted Stuart Brittle & Jonathon Kirk. Hawks hit back with Chris Arnone goal scored on 15.19 assisted Aaron Davies & Adam Brittle as the game became scrappy mainly due to some bad calls from the referee of which Hawks got the rough end of. However Hawks frustration boiled over which lead to both Ollie Lomax and Jake Nurse being thrown out of the game? It was pretty even with regards to chances created but Blackburn enjoyed more possession and looked dangerous every time they attacked Spartans goal but tit was still 2-1 to Hawks at the end of the first.
Due to the mayhem caused by the referee Spartans were on the powerplay which they worked well to score two goals to put them in front 3-2. The first timed 21.52 by Dave Pyatt assisted Will Barron & Stuart Brittle. The second & Spartans third was scored by Tom Parkinson, assisted Stevie Weeks & Nick Manning, timed at 23.30. This triggered a reaction from the Hawks who started to settle and concentrate on playing hockey but whilst we’d had the better of the early exchanges Hawks applied more and more pressure to equalise through Jonathon Adams assisted Craig Rodgers on 31.39. It was a good goal but Spartans should have really reacted better to counter the attack but credit to Hawks for creating and putting away the chance when it came. With their tails up Hawks added two more well taken goals, Adam Brittle assisted Jonathon Adams on 35.42, followed by an unassisted goal scored by Aaron Davies on 36.04 to make it 5-3 to Hawks. Credit to Spartans though they battled back but couldn’t get past Danny Brittle but it at least gave us a bit of hope for the final period.
Hawks dominated the final period, which flowed a lot better than the previous two, but Spartans were pushing them all the way and made them work hard despite Hawks putting themselves in a commanding position when Daniel MacKriel scored on 42.15, a powerplay goal assisted Scott Robson. Spartans hit back on 44.08 with a great goal from Stuart Brittle assisted Brandon Stones & Sam Jones to make it 6-4 to Hawks. Both teams had chances but it wasn’t until 59.15 when Hawks scored another powerplay goal, this time by Scott Robson, assisted Jared Owen & Adam Brittle to clinch the game 7-4, running out worthy winners in the end despite a spirited performance from Spartans. Will Barron for Spartans and Adam Brittle for Hawks received the Man of the Match beers in what was still a good game of hockey despite the referee’s interjections.
Final Score: Blackburn Hawks 7 – Sheffield Spartans 4
