The Sheffield Spartans can now announce the signing of Maros Stefanco for the 2015/16 season. Maros has previous experience of British Ice Hockey from his time playing for MK Thunder in 2010/11 and 2011/12 where he amassed 51 goals and 40 assists in 55 games, leading the Thunder in points during 2010/11 and being the second top point scorer in 2011/12.
Head coach Martin White had the following to say: “We’ve been in touch with Maros over the last few weeks about him joining us for the forthcoming season. Maros is a proven points scorer in the English game as his stats for MK Thunder show during his time there a few seasons ago and we’re excited to be able to bring him into the squad as we prepare for our opening fixtures of the season. Maros will bring finishing and guile to the Spartans and we’ll be looking to re-jig our lines over the next couple of weeks.
The addition of Maros and fellow import Martin Finkes has addressed two of our biggest pre-season concerns, the loss of JK to Hull Pirates and the need to create and convert more chances on a regular basis. By bringing in Martin to cover the loss of JK and Maros to give additional attacking capability we’re better placed to compete with the budgeted teams in our league.
Solway have brought back Senko and also signed a proven points scorer with Elite league experience. Blackburn have added to the core of their already strong double winning squad in the form of Bentham, Berra and Miettinen. Billingham have signed a strong finisher in Bostrom who we saw last weekend and Whitley have added two huge names in Longstaff and Payette. For us to be able to bring in two imports shows our commitment to competing with the other teams in the league as we look to build on last season’s success of making the playoffs.
We’re also looking at bringing in another player over the next couple of weeks, and if that bears fruit we’ll be able to field 3 very effective lines and also have the depth to field a forth when we don’t have injuries or work commitments.
On top of our senior players there are some very exciting young prospects we have training with us from the junior ranks, and we’ll be working with these bright prospects with a view to using them as and when the opportunity arises. Some have already iced in the pre-season and gave a good account of themselves, no doubt you’ll see more of them over the course of the season.”
Spartans opening fixtures are against the Senators, face-offs at 3.45pm Saturday 12th and 2.15pm Sunday 13th September at iceSheffield. Make it a hockey filled weekend and get yourselves down to iceSheffield.
