Sheffield Spartans are back in action this weekend with a tough game up in Billingham against the Stars. Our past encounters with the Stars seem to come up with interesting & enjoyable games of hockey with no reason why this weekend’s game should be any different. Both teams have made positive starts to the season but no doubt both teams will feel that they have a lot more to offer. It will serve as a good measure for Spartans in terms of where we are at and what we need to improve at this moment in time. Spartans Coach Martin commented…
“This weekend we face Billingham in what will be a tough game. We’ll be looking to improve on both our pre-season game vs the Stars and also on the performances we put in on our opening weekend vs the Senators.
Despite recording two 7-1 victories we were far from our best, which is what we’ll need to produce to pick up points from a strong Billingham outfit. The addition of Bostrom has given the Stars an extra edge in terms of finishing and add Bostrom to the already strong forward compliment boasted by the Stars including the likes of Eldar and Sykes means we’ll need to be disciplined and defensively aware on our trip north.
Despite the strong squad Billingham will field we’re also capable of creating plenty of chances although we’ll need to be more ruthless in front of goal than we displayed against the Sens. New signings Finkes and Stefanco have given us an extra dimension and we’ve also benefited from the additional depth by being able to move a couple of seasoned Spartans down the lines to give us a very competitive third unit. We won’t be at full strength at the weekend but we’re more than capable of winning with the squad available for this fixture. We’re under no illusions as to how hard it will be to repeat last season’s trip to the playoffs and games like Billingham away are where we need to pick up points to make it a reality.
We’re focused and looking forwards the game, hopefully we’ll transform the positivity into 2 points”
So Spartans head up to Billingham for a 6.30pm face off on Sunday for what will be a tough game but one the lads have every confidence of winning to build on last week’s four point start to the season
