Last weekend Spartans were in action up in Billingham against the Stars but an indifferent performance resulted in a 4-0 loss. There was very little between the teams on the night and it literally was a case of the team that took their chances when they came would win & that’s how it panned out with the Stars doing just that and doing so at were critical points of the game. Although questions came to light regarding certain aspects of Spartans play there were many positives to be taken from the game and on numerous occasions they were on top but credit to Stars, they got their noses in front and defended their lead with Spartans unable to breach their defences. In the end, it has to be said for that reason they deserved their win.
Spartans Coach Martin White commented…Games against Billingham are always tight in terms of competition and this one was no different. To come away with a 4-0 loss from a 50/50 is disappointing and it was all down to finishing. Credit to Billingham for putting their chances away, we know what we need to work on in order to turn games like these around. The shot count was even and both teams created chances in every period, Flavell kicked big for the Stars and we couldn’t find a way past him in this encounter.
There has been a positive response during the week in training, the lads know where they went wrong and have worked on those areas to bring about improvement which hopefully bear fruit in what will be a tough weekend for Spartans at Ice Sheffield as they face Sutton Sting in a double header. There have been some cracking games against Sting since they came up to this level a few seasons ago with no reason why this weekend’s games will be any different. Both teams will view this as an opportunity to bag some points and even though the season is in it’s infancy, the outcome of these games could have an impact on the final league standings…as was the case last season. That was then, this is now but if Spartans want to make the top four again, these are the games that need to be won which is the objective for Spartans this weekend.
This is how Spartans Coach Martin White calls it…This weekend we have a double header against Sutton whom we’ve had a few good encounters with over the past couple of seasons. With both teams looking to bounce back from defeats last weekend the games should be closely contested as no neither team will want to drop points on consecutive weekends in what promises to be a tight league where very point will count.
We’re expecting a tough couple of games but we need to get back on track and what in effect is a home double header is a great opportunity for us to do so, no doubt Sutton will be taking the same view. Despite a few comings and goings at Sutton we’ll be facing the same core of ex Sheffield players and with both groups knowing each other well the games are sure to be good to watch as the rivalry continues.
Our new players Martin and Maros are fitting in well and have both showed their class in our opening games. Maros has been a threat every time he’s stepped on to the ice and Martin has shown how composed he is at the back in our opening fixtures. The addition of Maros and Martin to our already talented squad has been
a welcome boost and we’ll only get better as the season progresses and everyone gets used to their new line mates and the understanding between players develops.
So, two intriguing games down at Ice Sheffield for which your continued support is always appreciated. Details are as follows…
Saturday 26th September… Sting vs Spartans – 3.45pm face off
Sunday 276th September… Spartans vs Sting – 2.15pm face off
Please note that Spartans “home” game is on the Sunday so the usual concessions will not apply on Saturday with Sutton Sting being the home team!
