Sheffield Spartans and Blackburn Hawks shared the spoils on Saturday at Ice Sheffield after a 3-3 draw which on reflection was a fair result. However, both teams may argue that had they done a little more, both points were there for the taking.
The first period was pretty even with Spartans opening the scoring on 6.41 through Ollie Barron assisted Stuart Brittle. Hawks threatened a little more to equalise whilst on the penalty kill with an excellent goal from Jonathon Adams after some nice work from Adam Brittle. Both netminders were kept busy and in form to see that the period ended all square at 1-1.
Spartans were slightly the better team in the second period in what was still a relatively close game, reflective of the 2-1 advantage they held over the Hawks at the 2nd period break with Stuart Brittle scoring a powerplay goal from Scott Morris and Ollie Barron.
Hawks got the third period off to the perfect start when they equalised on 41.34 with Jake Nurse scoring, assisted by Daniel Mackriel & Jonathon Adams. Spartans battled away to regain the lead on 45.48, Nick Whyatt finding the net from Alex Harding & Ross Jordan. Hawks hit back to equalise again, this time through Dan Mackriel with an unassisted goal on 48.59. The game was there for the taking with both teams having chances but as the clock ticked down Spartans under quite a lot of pressure but they couldn’t break down a stubborn defence which saw the game end in 3-3; after which tempers flared which saw an amazing 144 penalty minutes handed out. It was a shame really has it had been a good, close physical game overall. Man of the Match Awards went to Stuart Brittle for Spartans whilst his brother Adam Brittle picked up the accolade for Stars.
Final Score: Spartans 3 Hawks 3
