Spartans were still missing Andy Cook but otherwise were at full strength with Nick Whyatt back but with no 18’s stepping up other than Spartans regular Tom Parkinson. Brad Day started in goal.
The first period was evenly played out but Spartans looked the better of the two teams, creating the better chances in a scrappy period, made so by some bizarre decisions from the referee. This was reflective of the 2-0 score line at the end of the period with Stuart Brittle scoring Spartans first on 15.18 with assists going to Sam Jones & Dougie Jordan. The period was in its final minute when Stars were called for too many men on the ice which Spartans took advantage of to score their second goal; a powerplay goal from Stuart Brittle assisted Sam Jones.
The second period continued where the first had left off but Stars gradually began to gain the upper hand in the latter stages of the period to put Spartans under a bit of pressure but some fine netminding from Brad Day along with a strong defence in front of him kept Stars out to ensure that Spartans were still 2-0 up at the end of the second period.
Into the third which saw Stars try to stamp their authority on to the game which they did to score a good goal through Michael Bowman on 43.28, assisted Paul Windridge & Andy Finn. Spartans didn’t panic and despite being on the back foot at times managed some good break outs to counter Billingham who were thankful for Flavell saving some decent chances. However there was nothing he could when an impressive Stuart Brittle found Ollie Barron to fire in on 53.11 to make it 3-1 to Spartans. This swung the game back into Spartans favour who were still playing well to defend against a determined Billingham team who had seemed to rediscover their form but in the end a sound defence backed by Brad Day in goal saw Spartans play the game out to deservedly and rare win against Stars. Nick Manning won the Man of the Match Award for Spartans with an impressive Andy Munroe winning the accolade for the Stars.
Final Score: Spartans 3 Billingham Stars 1
