Spartans take on league champions

Spartans v Hawks

Sheffield Spartans pursuit of an end of season play-off place continues this Saturday at Ice Sheffield against this season’s newly crowned NIHL North One Champions, Blackburn Hawks. Spartans come into the game against the undefeated Hawks on the back of two wins against Manchester Minotaurs. Whilst those two performances weren’t the best of the season, the team showed great character and spirit to get the points from those games; which was always the main objective. Spartans won’t be under as much pressure this weekend as Blackburn will be clear favourites to pick up two points which may just suit Spartans and allow them to play a more relaxed and natural game.

The aim two weeks ago was four wins from our last four games; that has not changed and everyone associated with Spartans are confident the boys can put up a credible performance and maybe just spring a surprise. It’s not beyond the realms of possibilities as Spartans showed when they drew in Blackburn earlier in the season, just losing out on the win in the final minute. That was one of only two points Hawks have dropped this season and they are a class act and worthy Champions that will be looking to finish the season undefeated so it won’t be anything other than a tough game for Spartans.

Coach Martin White was in philosophical mood ahead of training when he commented: “This weekend we host the currently undefeated Blackburn Hawks, and with only 2 league games remaining we’ll be looking to build on the determination and character shown last weekend to see if we can deny the Hawks an unbeaten league campaign. It’ll be a tough game and we won’t be fancied to pick up any points, despite this the lads know we’re capable of beating the Hawks if we can eliminate the odd lapse in judgement and play 60 minutes of disciplined hockey. Discipline will be our watch word this coming weekend. If we can pick up some point’s vs Hawks it’ll leave us in a better position and with plenty of confidence going into the final game vs Sutton”.

Games between Spartans and Blackburn are usually exciting encounters with plenty of action and with both teams looking for the win, for differing reasons, it once again promises to be another good game. Please note that the face-off time for this game on Saturday is 4.30pm
