Spartans overcame an inform Telford Tigers at Ice Sheffield on Sunday with a solid all round team performance to run out deserved 6-2 winners. In a game which its arguable that the winning margin should have been far greater it was Tigers who started the better against a sluggish looking Spartans. Tigers showed a lot of skill to overturn possession and whilst Spartans defence failed to react Joseph Aston fired one in to see Tigers take the lead on 4.15. The goal seemed to trigger Spartans into life and their positivity was rewarded when Martin Finkes fired in a cracker of a shot to equalise on 8.22 with assists to Stuart Brittle & Ollie Barron. As the game progressed Spartans dominated further which saw Shaun Wild, assisted Scott Morris & Mikey Mawer, assisted Will Barron put Spartans in front at 3-1; goals timed 13.05 & 18.13. It wasn’t all plain sailing though, Telford did pose a threat at times and Spartans were thankful to netminder Andy Bagshaw to make the saves to protect the lead. However it could or should have been a wider margin than the two goal one Spartans took into the second period.
Spartans came out all guns blazing and extended their lead through Will Barron who took his chance with calm authority from Andy Turner timed 21.29. Telford were under the cosh but an inexcusable defensive lapse saw possession handed on a plate to Adam Taylor who made no mistake to pull one back for Tigers on 25.41. A quick response from Spartans saw Ollie Barron pop one in on 26.36 assisted Stuart Brittle & Chris Wilcox to make it 5-2 to Spartans. Credit has to go to Telford though who came back at Spartans to finish the period well on top but some solid defending and some great netminding from Andy Bagshaw thwarted Tigers attempts to get back into the game,
Tigers continued where they left off but Spartans rode out the storm to hit back at Telford and although both teams created good chances, as the period progressed it always seemed that Spartans would be the more likely to score which proved to be the case when Ollie Barron scored on 52.45, assisted Stuart Brittle & Elliott Knell. From this point on, Spartans shaded proceedings, particularly in defence where they handled Tigers offensive threat with authority whilst the forwards kept Tigers defence on their toes in an exciting finish to the game. However there was no more scoring to see the final score finish at Spartans 6 Telford 2.
It was a much improved Spartans performance in which they showed a lot of character to claim a valuable win against a talented, skilful & fast skating Telford team. It was from perfect but there was so many positives to take from the game than negatives including a superb performance from netminder Andy Bagshaw who deservedly picked up the man of the match beers.
Next weekend sees a double header against Solihull Barons which sees the action kick off at Ice Sheffield on Saturday with a 3.45pm face off followed by a trip to Solihull on Sunday for a 6.00pm face off.
Final Score: Spartans 6 – Telford Tigers 2
