Spartans v Hawks

Spartans v Hawks

This Saturday Spartans face Blackburn Hawks on home ice looking to bury the disappointment of losing 9-0 over in Blackburn last Sunday. A short benched Spartans put in an admirable performance the previous night against Billingham Stars but with the bench further reduced to injury it was a tall order to face Hawks who’s impressive form continues. With players missing and uncertainty surrounding one or two, Spartans will once again be short benched but we have been here before. Some of our best performances have been under such circumstances and it’s going to be a difficult task this Saturday but one the team will relish; a task they have had good preparation for working on key areas of our game to ensure we can be at our optimum with the players we do have available.

Spartans Coach Martin White gave his summarisation of recent events whilst looking forward to facing the Hawks…”This weekend sees us face Blackburn in a reverse of last weekends Sunday game. Hopefully there’ll be a reverse in the result as well after we suffered a heavy defeat on Blackburn’s ice. Short benched and tired from the previous day’s victory over Billingham saw us on the wrong side of a score line which is probably a fair reflection of Blackburn’s ability and the performance they put in on the night.

We’re likely to be short benched again this weekend due to injuries, holidays and work commitments but we’ll be fresher and determined to show the Hawks that they shouldn’t consider our first encounter of the season to be the norm for the remaining fixtures.

Although we suffered a heavy defeat vs. Blackburn our Saturday game vs. Billingham saw us pick up the points with a deserving 6-4 victory. Despite a sluggish opening few shifts we settled in to a decent rhythm and moved the puck around well creating opportunities throughout the game. Billingham as always proved to be dogged opponents but it was about time we picked up points from the Stars especially with the league looking like it will be tighter than ever this season.

Although we’ll have an eye on last weekend’s defeat it will only be to serve as motivation for the future encounters, something we did well last season where we took the Hawks close in 3 league fixtures after a heavy opening defeat. This time we’ll be looking to go one better”.

We’ve had some cracking games over the years against the Hawks down at Ice Sheffield; hopefully this Saturday, 10th October will be another memorable tussle. There is only one way to find out… Please note that the face-off time for this fixture is 1.30pm #allspartans
