Spartans are back in action after a couple of blank weekends taking on SIHA sister team Sheffield Senators in a double header which will also double up as our Winter Classic game. The format is slightly different this year due to both teams competing in the same league. The final aggregate score from this weekend’s games will determine who takes the trophy.
Spartans will be looking to bounce back, despite being short on numbers once again, from their disappointing 6-0 defeat to local rivals Sutton Sting. Confidence was high after two good wins over Whitley Warriors & Solway Sharks but those performances were not mirrored against Sutton. It was frustrating to be 2-0 down at the end of the first period as we had numerous opportunities to score but couldn’t find the net. A bright start to the second by Sutton saw them go 3-0 up but Spartans were guilty of making the same mistakes and as in the first were unable to make their chances count, chances that on another day would have been buried. However as the period progressed Sutton looked the more likely winner, happy to mop up our mistakes and hit us on the break. The third period belonged to Sting, they asserted themselves to control the period to score three good goals to run out deserved winners on the day. Had we taken our chances it could have been a different story but we didn’t, Sting did.
This weekend offers Spartans a good opportunity to get back to winning ways and boost our position to then push on in the New Year and bag a top four spot. Senators have shown a gradual improvement as the season has progressed and it is only a matter of time before they grab their first points of the campaign. Spartans need to be on their game and can’t take anything for granted. Senators will provide a very different opponent to the one we faced at the beginning of the season when Spartans recorded two straight forward wins in games which both teams weren’t at their best. It promises to be an intriguing and hopefully an entertaining weekend with both teams needing points for different reasons. We hope to see as many of you as possible for this all Sheffield clash, both teams last games before the festive break with the added bonus of bragging rights for claiming the Winter Classic Trophy.
