Spartans went into the game still short on numbers due to injuries but also confident of getting a result to get their season back on track. However it didn’t go to plan with a lack lustre showing in the first period against an in form & confident Warriors team who were clearly up for this one. Whitley dominated from the off to see them 4-0 up within seven minutes through Kippin, Harley, Good and Queenan. Warriors also had a goal washed out but it was as clear as the fog hanging over the ice to why it was. It could have been worse for Spartans. A time out steadied the Spartans ship somewhat but we still didn’t pose a threat offensively but did manage to hold a rampant Whitley side at bay.
Into the second period there seemed to be a bit more positivity from Spartans and they actually brought Whitley netminder into action with a few good shots on goal. However Brandon Stones was the busier of the two goalies and there was nothing he could do when Longstaff picked up on a rebound to fire home in the 23rd minute. There was no way back from this point despite a more concerted effort from Spartans but Whitley were still in control and were in no mood to give up their lead with a more physical approach to the game and were worthy of their lead going into the final period.
Spartans stepped it up another notch but it was still short of what we are capable of and what we expect of ourselves but it was an improved effort in what was a lot more of an even period with just one goal, a nice one too put away by Jamie Tinsley. Both teams had further chances to put goals on the score sheet but as even as it was, Whitley always looked stronger on the puck and saw the game out with a confident and determined showing to claim a deserved 6-0 victory.
The damage was done in the first half of the first period, a period where Spartans were out of sorts and were lucky not to be further behind. Despite an improved effort from that point they were simply no match for Whitley Warriors who thoroughly deserved their win with a competent, physical and rounded performance. Spartans Man of the Match award went to Brandon Stones in what was a disappointing showing from our point of view.
Final Score: Whitley Warriors 6 Spartans 0
